Dried spotted caterpillars! I saw these at Ledisi village in South Africa. I got super excited because we have the exact same thing in Nigeria! They are called Egu in Igbo and are used for garnishing traditional foods. In South Africa they are called Mopane, and used similarly. Seeing these caterpillars reinforced to me how connected we all are. I’m proud to say, though I never ate these back home, I took a bite in South Africa. It was crunchy, salty and tasted like dried shrimp. Not bad at all.
